SCENE 1: THE SILENCE OF WAITING
(The Hospital Waiting Room. Dim fluorescent lights. The hum of machines in the distance. Neel sits on a plastic chair, head in hands. His tie is loose. Ira is sleeping on his shoulder. Sanya, in her nurse uniform, walks in holding a file. She hesitates, then walks to him.)
Miss Sanya: (Whispering) Neel?
Mr. Neel: (Looking up, eyes red) Any news?
Miss Sanya: The doctor is still with her. Stabilizing her breathing. It happens sometimes with this condition. Don't worry. Aruna Aunty is a fighter.
Mr. Neel: Fighters get tired too, Sanya. She’s been fighting for five years. I’m tired just watching her.
Miss Sanya: (Sitting beside him, leaving a respectful gap) You should eat. You came straight from the office.
Mr. Neel: I’m not hungry. I have to finish this audit report by morning. If I lose this client, I can't pay the hospital bill next month.
Miss Sanya: Money will come. Strength needs to be fed. (She hands him a small packet of biscuits). Eat. For Ira. If you faint, who will carry her?
(Neel looks at the biscuits. He looks at Sanya. Her eyes are full of a kindness that hurts him.)
Mr. Neel: Why are you still here? Your shift ended at 9.
Miss Sanya: I... I had paperwork.
Mrs. Jaanu: (Mopping the floor nearby, muttering) Paperwork doesn't have brown eyes and a sad face. Love makes overtime, not paperwork.
Miss Sanya: (Blushing) Jaanu Maasi, hush.
Mr. Neel: (Eating a biscuit mechanically) My mother asked about you today. Before she drifted off. She asked if "Sanya brought the soup."
Miss Sanya: I did. But she was sleeping. I left it by the bed.
Mr. Neel: She thinks you are an angel.
Miss Sanya: And what do you think?
(Silence. Neel stops chewing. He looks at her, then looks away at the wall.)
Mr. Neel: I think you are a very good nurse.
(Sanya’s face falls. The rejection is subtle but sharp.)
Miss Sanya: (Standing up stiffly) I’ll go check on her vitals.
(Sanya walks away fast. Neel reaches out as if to stop her, but his hand drops. Rohan enters, carrying two coffees.)
Mr. Rohan: You idiot.
Mr. Neel: What?
Mr. Rohan: "You are a very good nurse"? Really? That’s what you said? You might as well have slapped her.
Mr. Neel: It’s the truth, Rohan.
Mr. Rohan: It’s a wall, Neel. You build walls every time she comes close. She loves you. The whole hospital knows. Even the X-ray machine knows.
Mr. Neel: I can't afford love, Rohan. Look at me. I have a sick mother, a kid sister to educate, and debt that could drown a ship. Sanya deserves a guy who can take her to movies, not ICUs.
Mr. Rohan: So you will decide for her? That’s arrogant.
Mr. Neel: That’s responsible.
(Neel takes the coffee, burning his tongue, welcoming the pain.)
(Lights fade.)
SCENE 2: THE COFFEE AND THE FATHER
(The Hospital Canteen. 12:30 AM. Empty tables. Sanya is sitting alone, stirring a cold tea. Her father, Pratap, enters. He looks worried.)
Mr. Pratap: Sanya. Come home.
Miss Sanya: Papa? Why are you here?
Mr. Pratap: Because my daughter is sitting in a hospital canteen at midnight for a man who won't even look at her.
Miss Sanya: Papa, please. His mother is critical.
Mr. Pratap: His mother is always critical. And you are always waiting. For two years, Sanya. I have seen you. You cook for them. You stay late. You pray for them. What has he given you?
Miss Sanya: He gives me respect. He trusts me with his family.
Mr. Pratap: He uses you as a crutch! He leans on you because he is weak. But he won't hold your hand because he is scared. I found a match for you. The boy is an engineer in Pune.
Miss Sanya: (Standing up) I don't want an engineer in Pune.
Mr. Pratap: You want a future! Neel has no future. He is buried under responsibilities. Do you want to be the second mother to his sister? The nurse to his mother? Is that the life you dreamed of?
Miss Sanya: I didn't dream of a life, Papa. I dreamed of him.
Mr. Pratap: (Softening) Dreams break, beta. Reality stays. If he loved you, he would have spoken by now. Silence is also an answer.
(Sanya looks down. Tears fall into her tea.)
Miss Sanya: Maybe he needs time.
Mr. Pratap: Time runs out. Come home. If he cares, let him come to our door. But you will not wait in this canteen anymore.
(Pratap grabs her hand gently. Sanya resists for a second, then follows him. She looks back at the door, hoping Neel walks in. He doesn't.)
(Lights fade.)
SCENE 3: THE MEMORY OF RAIN (FLASHBACK)
(Neel’s Balcony. 6 Months Ago. Raining. Neel and Sanya are standing there, drying off.)
Miss Sanya: That was fun! Getting soaked!
Mr. Neel: It was reckless. You’ll catch a cold.
Miss Sanya: You worry too much. Look at the city, Neel. It’s beautiful when it rains. Everything looks clean.
Mr. Neel: It looks blurry to me.
Miss Sanya: That’s because you forget to wipe your glasses. (She takes off his glasses and wipes them with her dupatta). Here. See now?
(She puts them back on him. Her face is inches from his. The moment is electric. Neel stares at her lips. He wants to kiss her. He leans in... then pulls back sharply.)
Mr. Neel: I should... I should check on Ma.
Miss Sanya: (Hurt) She’s sleeping, Neel. We are awake.
Mr. Neel: I can't be awake, Sanya. If I wake up, I’ll want things. And I can't have things.
Miss Sanya: Maybe you don't have to "have" them. Maybe you just have to accept them.
Mr. Neel: (Turning away) Go inside. It’s cold.
(Sanya stands there, watching his back. The rain hides her tears.)
(Lights fade back to present.)
SCENE 4: THE CONFESSION IN THE DARK
(Hospital Corridor. 2:00 AM. Neel is pacing. Ira is awake now, sitting on the bench swinging her legs. Rohan is asleep in a chair.)
Miss Ira: Bhaiyya.
Mr. Neel: Yes, Ira?
Miss Ira: Is Sanya Didi coming back?
Mr. Neel: She went home. Her father came.
Miss Ira: She was crying.
Mr. Neel: How do you know?
Miss Ira: Her eyes were puffy. Like yours. Why do you make her cry? She brings me chocolates. She braids Ma’s hair.
Mr. Neel: Because I am protecting her, Ira. From us. Our life is hard. She deserves easy.
Miss Ira: (Wise beyond her years) That’s stupid.
Mr. Neel: Excuse me?
Miss Ira: Easy is boring. Sanya Didi doesn't like easy. She likes you. And you like her. Even I know that.
Mr. Neel: It’s complicated.
Miss Ira: It’s not. Ma told me yesterday. She said, "Neel is waiting for me to die so he can be free to live."
(Neel stops pacing. He feels like he’s been punched.)
Mr. Neel: She said that?
Miss Ira: Yes. She said she feels like a burden. She said, "If he loses Sanya because of me, I will never forgive myself, even in heaven."
(Neel sinks onto the bench next to Ira. He covers his face.)
Mr. Neel: I thought I was being a good son.
Mrs. Jaanu: (Walking by with her mop) Being a martyr is not being a good son, Doctor Sahab. It’s just being a sad son.
Mr. Neel: I’m not a doctor, Jaanu Maasi.
Mrs. Jaanu: You act like one. Treating everyone’s pain except your own. Go.
Mr. Neel: Go where? It’s 2 AM.
Mrs. Jaanu: Love spoke after midnight, didn't it? The heart is awake. Go to her house. Stand outside. Throw a rock at her window. Be a hero for once.
Mr. Neel: (Looking at Rohan) Can you watch Ira?
Mr. Rohan: (Opening one eye) I’ve been watching her for 3 hours. Go, Romeo. Before her dad ships her to Pune.
(Neel stands up. He adjusts his tie. He looks terrified but determined.)
Mr. Neel: I’m going.
(He runs down the corridor.)
(Lights fade.)
SCENE 5: DAWN ON THE TERRACE
(Sanya’s House Terrace / Hospital Terrace - Split Stage or continuous action. Let's place it at the Hospital Terrace for dramatic unity. Neel returns, panting. Sanya is there. She came back.)
Mr. Neel: Sanya?
Miss Sanya: (Turning around, surprised) Neel? I thought you were with...
Mr. Neel: I went to your house! Your dad said you came back here!
Miss Sanya: I forgot my file. And... I couldn't sleep.
Mr. Neel: (Walking towards her, breathing hard) Listen to me. Don't speak. Just listen.
Miss Sanya: Okay.
Mr. Neel: I am a mess. My bank account is empty. My mother might not make it to next year. My sister needs braces. I have nothing to offer you but debt and hospital visits.
Miss Sanya: Is this a proposal or a warning?
Mr. Neel: It’s the truth! I tried to push you away because I wanted you to have a garden, not a desert. But tonight... tonight Ira told me I’m an idiot. And my mother thinks she’s a burden because I’m unhappy.
Miss Sanya: Aruna Aunty said that?
Mr. Neel: Yes. So... I am being selfish. I am choosing to be happy. Because if I am happy, she will die in peace.
Miss Sanya: (Stepping closer) And what makes you happy, Neel?
Mr. Neel: You. wiping my glasses. You bringing soup. You waiting in the canteen. I don't want an easy life, Sanya. I want a life with you. Even if it’s hard. Especially if it’s hard.
(Neel takes a deep breath. He looks at her deeply.)
Mr. Neel: Will you hold my hand? Not as a nurse. As... mine?
(Sanya looks at him. The sun is just starting to rise, casting a golden glow.)
Miss Sanya: You are late, Mr. Neel.
Mr. Neel: (Heart dropping) I know. I’m sorry.
Miss Sanya: (Smiling through tears) But you arrived. That’s what matters.
(She reaches out and takes his hand. She interlaces their fingers tightly.)
Miss Sanya: And by the way... I like deserts. They have the best stars.
(Neel smiles—a massive, relieved smile that transforms his tired face. He lifts her hand and kisses her knuckles gently.)
Mr. Neel: I love you.
Miss Sanya: (Whispering) Finally.
(Mr. Pratap enters the terrace, followed by Rohan and Ira. Pratap looks stern.)
Mr. Pratap: So. No Pune?
Miss Sanya: (Holding Neel’s hand tighter) No Pune, Papa.
Mr. Pratap: (Sighing, then smiling slightly) Good. Pune is too far anyway. (To Neel) You better fix your finances, boy.
Mr. Neel: Yes, Sir. Starting tomorrow.
Mr. Rohan: Today. It’s morning.
(They all look at the sunrise. The hospital alarms are distant. The fear is there, but so is the love.)
(FADE TO BLACK)
CURTAIN NOTE
Thematic Summary:
Duty
creates the structure of life, but love provides the oxygen. We often
think that sacrifice proves our love, but sometimes, allowing ourselves
to be happy is the greatest gift we can give to those who care for us.
Love doesn't need perfect timing; it just needs the courage to speak
when the silence becomes too loud.
